Tulip Season in Germany: Where to See Blooms in April

Home » Travel in Germany » Tulip Season in Germany: Where to See Blooms in April

When we think of spring in Europe, one image probably pops into everyone’s mind: endless fields of colorful tulips in the Netherlands. But did you know you can also find vibrant tulip fields in Germany — without the crowds?

We originally planned a tulip trip to the Netherlands this April, but things didn’t go quite as planned. A suspicious-looking hotel booking made me cancel our reservation. By the time I started looking again, most hotels were either fully booked or way too expensive. So… we stayed in Germany for the Easter break instead.

That’s when I came across a post by an influencer on Instagram — she visited a tulip field near Düsseldorf, Germany! A quick check on Google Maps showed some great reviews, so we decided to take a little road trip and see for ourselves. We weren’t sure if the flowers were still blooming or already harvested, or whether we could even find the exact spot.

But as it turned out — we were lucky! ☀️ The weather was beautiful that day, and although some of the tulips had already been picked, there was still a big, colorful field perfect for photos and soaking up the spring vibes.

In this post, I’m sharing the exact location of the tulip field, how to get there, and some useful travel tips if you’re planning to visit too!

🌷 A Hidden Gem: Yes, There Are Tulip Fields in Germany Too!

↓ But first — let me show you some photos!

↑ huge field bursting with colorful tulips
↑ Tulips and a windmill in the background
↑ Okay, it’s not an old Dutch-style windmill, but still super photogenic!
↑ A splash of red in a sea of yellow tulips — like a work of art 🎨
↑ Can’t help but marvel at the beauty of nature. What an amazing Creator!
↑ Shades of pink, soft and dreamy
↑ Deep purple blooms — so rich and striking
↑ Each flower smiling at its brightest
↑ Some of them grew especially tall — towering above the rest!
↑ No crowds, no stress — just space to slow down, enjoy, and take your time with photos. That made me so happy!

So… here’s what happened with our original tulip trip plan to the Netherlands.

I actually booked our accommodation months in advance — it was a vacation park managed by a well-known group. All seemed fine at first… until I started receiving strange messages asking me to complete a “pre-check-in” on their external website, which required a ton of personal data. They claimed my reservation would be canceled if I didn’t comply — even though they already had all my info. Weird, right?

Then came another message asking me to pay the cleaning fee via bank transfer. That raised even more red flags — I had already provided my credit card during booking, and usually you just pay at the property. Why would they need a separate wire transfer?

That’s when I decided to dig deeper. I found tiny fine print in the contract saying that I had to transfer a €500 deposit via bank transfer one week before arrival — otherwise, the reservation would be automatically canceled. 😱

To put things into perspective: the accommodation itself was only around €800. This extra €500 wasn’t a prepayment — it was a deposit. But if anything got damaged, I might never get it back. And transferring money to another country isn’t always straightforward.

After years of traveling, this was the first time I’d run into something like this. It just didn’t feel right — so I canceled the whole thing.

Unfortunately, by then, it was too late to find other reasonably priced places in the Netherlands for Easter weekend. Most were fully booked or way overpriced. So, we decided to stay in Germany — and honestly, I’m so glad we did.

↑ We got to enjoy a tulip field for free — and that’s a blessing in itself!

Where is the Tulip Field?

The tulip field is located on the outskirts of a small town called 📍Büttgen.

So… where exactly is Büttgen?
Büttgen is a quiet town situated near Düsseldorf, Germany’s sixth-largest city — making it a perfect spring stop for a relaxed countryside experience just outside the city buzz.

How to Get to the Tulip Field: Transportation Guide

🚆 By Public Transport

We did a road trip that day, so I don’t have first-hand experience with getting there by public transport. But I did some research to help you out!

The town of Büttgen has its own S-Bahn station, which is just a 20-minute ride on the S8 line from Düsseldorf Central Station.

📍 Station name: Büttgen S-Bahnhof, Kaarst

However, since the tulip field is located on the outskirts, there are no direct buses or public transport to the site. After getting off at the station, you’ll need to walk around 30 minutes to reach the field.

🅿️ Where to Park If You’re on a Road Trip

We went by car, and to be honest — at first, we had no idea where to park. We weren’t even 100% sure where the field was! So we just followed a coordinate shared by a stranger on Google Maps and drove in that direction.

Along the way, we accidentally turned into a restricted road for residents only, and ended up in a parking area that belonged to a horse stable — not a public parking spot.

Luckily, we ran into a kind lady who asked if we were looking for the tulip field. She kindly explained where we could park and how to walk from there. I’m sharing her tip with you here! 🙌

(Mini drama alert: Just as we were getting back in the car, a very angry local man stormed over and started yelling at us non-stop — like a machine gun 😅. He was super rude and told us to leave immediately, saying cars weren’t allowed in that area. We figured there were probably too many visitors coming in for the flowers, and it was disturbing the neighborhood — unfortunately, we just happened to become his target that day…)

Anyway — after taking a deep breath and resetting our mood — we followed the kind lady’s directions and parked here:

🅿️ Parking: Tespo Sportpark public parking lot
🚶‍♀️ Walking distance to the field: About 20 minutes

While putting together this blog post, I checked Google Maps again and noticed another parking area on the other side — and even spotted a café called “Café zum Tulpenfeld” (which literally means “Café by the Tulip Field” in German).

We didn’t explore that area ourselves, but the café’s name definitely made me wonder if there might be more tulip fields nearby on that side too.

What to Wear in April: Weather & Outfit Advice

April weather in Germany can be very unpredictable.

There’s even a local saying:
“April macht, was er will.”
Which basically means: “April does whatever it wants.”

It might snow.
It might be sunny.
It could be 0°C or suddenly jump to 20°C. You just never know!

🧥 Packing tip: Bring a windproof, warm outer layer like a lightweight down jacket or fleece. It’s also smart to pack a few thinner tops you can layer depending on the temperature.

↑ We were lucky with the weather — a light trench coat was enough!

I also noticed some visitors dressed up for photos, with picnic baskets and cute props. Perfect if you’re planning a spring photo shoot!

↓ 👟 The ground was a bit muddy, so wear shoes with good grip!

↑ As you can see in the photos, there were plenty of muddy patches — choose your shoes wisely.
↑ A slip in the mud would definitely ruin the vibe. 😅

Best Time to See Tulips in Germany

Just to give you a reference — we visited on April 19, 2025, and the field was in beautiful bloom.

Generally speaking, mid-April is probably the sweet spot. Of course, weather varies every year and can affect blooming times.

When I researched tulip trips to the Netherlands earlier, here’s what I learned:

  • Early April: Buds may start showing but not yet fully open
  • Mid-April: Peak bloom
  • Late April: Still pretty good
  • Early to mid-May: End of the season

And I guess Germany’s climate is pretty similar to the Netherlands, that timeline should work here too!

Admission Fee

💸 Good news — this tulip field is free to visit!
That said, please don’t pick the flowers or trample through the rows. These are working fields, and the flowers belong to the farmers.

Some Google Maps reviews mentioned that you might be able to buy tulips directly from the farmer, but we didn’t see any flower stands on the day we visited.

Final Thoughts

Of course, if we’re talking about tulips, Keukenhof in the Netherlands is still the ultimate floral experience — no doubt about that. 🌷
But it also comes with huge crowds and can be tricky if you’re hoping for the perfect photo.

If you’re planning a road trip in Germany in April, especially around Düsseldorf and Cologne, I really recommend adding this lesser-known tulip field to your itinerary. It’s a peaceful, colorful stop — and totally worth it if you’re in the area!

I still hope to visit the Netherlands next Easter — and when I do, I’ll be sure to share that experience too!
