Elbphilharmonie: Hamburg’s Stunning Architecture & World-Class Music Hub
The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is an iconic landmark in Germany’s Hamburg, and it’s one of those must-visit spots for any traveler. Nestled right along the Elbe River (which also gives the building its name), this concert hall boasts a design that’s as unique as it is stunning! The top of the building curves like ocean waves, and even the glass windows are crafted with wave-like curves—a true work of art! No matter where you look at it from, there’s a different visual treat to enjoy. My suggestion? Don’t just admire it from the land—take a cruise ride for a whole new perspective!
The best part? The viewing platform is free to access! From up there, you’ll get breathtaking views of the Hamburg harbor, the city skyline, and even the historic Warehouse District (Speicherstadt), which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. However, to explore the interior of the concert hall, you’ll need to join a guided tour. Wondering how to grab a free ticket for the viewing platform? Or maybe you’re curious about booking a tour? Don’t worry, I’ve got all the details for you right here!
And if you’re a fan of music, why not book a spot for a music workshop or attend a concert by world-class musicians? The Elbphilharmonie is a perfect place to experience an unforgettable musical feast.

Introduction to the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg
The Concert Hall That Went Over €789M Budget
This architectural project went way over budget—initially estimated at 77 million euros, but the final cost skyrocketed to 866 million euros, a whopping 789 million euros more than expected. It was one of the hot topics when I just moved to Germany back in 2017.
The Unique Design of the Elbphilharmonie
This postmodern masterpiece has a top that resembles ocean waves, and the building itself is divided into three main sections:
- The bottom is parking garage
- The middle section, the concert hall
- Upstairs, you’ll find the The Westin Hamburg, a Marriott hotel

The wave-like design doesn’t stop at the building’s top—it’s reflected in the curved glass windows too! The attention to detail is simply impressive.

In Hamburg’s other popular attraction, “Miniatur Wunderland,” there’s a model of the Elbphilharmonie, simulating the interior design of the concert hall.

↓The Elbphilharmonie is also home to The Westin Hamburg, a Marriott hotel.

The Elbphilharmonie officially opened its doors in 2017—so it’s still incredibly new!

Another concert hall I absolutely love is Harpa in Iceland! Stay tuned for more about that in an upcoming post!
How to Get to the Elbphilharmonie | Location and Transportation
Elbphilharmonie: Where to Find It on the Map
Address: Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Platz der Deutschen Einheit, 20457 Hamburg
🚆 Public Transport Options
In Hamburg, aside from the DB Navigator, locals often use the hvv app to check transportation schedules—feel free to download it ahead of time! If you’re taking the U-Bahn (light rail), you can hop on the U3 line and get off at Baumwall (Elbphilharmonie) station, or take the U4 line and get off at Überseequartier station.

🚗 Driving and Parking
While we explored Hamburg by car, I wouldn’t recommend parking right at the Elbphilharmonie. The fees are steep (the minimum parking rate is €15 for four hours), and you’ll need to book a spot at least two hours in advance through the official website.
Instead, I suggest parking at Speicherstadt and taking a leisurely walk to visit: Miniatur Wunderland → Speicherstadt → Elbphilharmonie. These three attractions are very close to each other, and they’re all must-see spots in Hamburg!
Tips for Getting Your Free Ticket: Visit the Elbphilharmonie’s Viewing Platform (Plaza)
Besides admiring the stunning architecture of the Elbphilharmonie, you can also visit the 37-meter-high viewing platform (Plaza), where you’ll be treated to a 360° view of the city and the harbor.
Viewing Platform Ticket Prices
You can book tickets online via the official website for just €3. The benefit of booking in advance? Skip the lines and secure your spot!
If there are any remaining tickets, you can grab one for free on-site! Just remember to stop by the ticket desk for your complimentary entry ticket ↓
(Even though the project went way over budget, Hamburg’s city government still offers free tickets to visitors—how thoughtful!)

Once you have your ticket, you can take the “longest escalator in Europe” to the viewing platform (Plaza). (If you’re like me coming from Hong Kong, you might not be that impressed by the “longest escalator in Europe”… Haha!)
Family Travel Tip: While most visitors take the regular escalator, we were asked to use the accessible entrance due to our stroller, which had an elevator—super convenient!

Viewing Platform (Plaza) Opening Hours
Open daily from 10:00 AM to 12:00 AM (last entry at 11:30 PM).
At the Elbphilharmonie Viewing Platform: Overlooking the Port and the Speicherstadt Heritage
At the Elbphilharmonie’s viewing platform, visitors can take a walk around and enjoy different perspectives of Hamburg’s cityscape, the port, and the historic Warehouse District (German: Speicherstadt). It’s worth mentioning that Hamburg has been a key trade port since medieval times, and the Speicherstadt was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2015 for its historical significance.

When we visited Hamburg in 2021, it was during the pandemic… Although the viewing platform is a semi-outdoor space, we still had to wear masks. Behind us is the port of Hamburg, the largest in Germany, the third largest in Europe!

I thought the concert hall would be open to the public for free visits, but I was a bit disappointed when we were stopped. After doing some research online, I learned that visiting the concert hall requires booking a guided tour ticket in advance. I’ll share all the details below!

Check the viewing platform on Google Maps ↓
Concert Hall Guided Tours: How and where to book it?
While exploring the viewing platform, I noticed, wait… the concert hall isn’t open to the public for tours? At that moment, I thought it was a bit pity just to enjoy the views, especially since I love and enjoy music! Later, while working on this post, I found out that you can actually book an English-speaking guided tour on the official website.
Duration: 90 minutes | Ticket price: €20
I missed out on this opportunity myself! But next time I visit Hamburg, I’ll definitely include this concert hall tour in my itinerary. Or, I could buy tickets to attend a concert and experience the world-class music and architectural design in a truly artistic feast!
Want to Enjoy a Concert at the Elbphilharmonie? Here’s Where to Buy Tickets!
In 2023, I saw on Instagram that the famous pianist Yuja Wang performed here with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, playing one of my favorites, Rhapsody in Blue. I seriously felt like I missed out on something amazing! There’s again another concert at the end of 2024, with the talented Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson joining Yuja Wang for a piano duo performance. Of course, the tickets sold out super fast!
You can check the official website for upcoming concerts and see if there’s a performance you’d like to experience. It’s a great chance to enjoy the stunning architecture of the concert hall while listening to some incredible music. Besides concerts, they also offer music workshops suitable for children or adults, so definitely check those out if you’re interested!
Elbphilharmonie Souvenir Shop: Unique Items
The Elbphilharmonie souvenir shop has a lot of beautiful (and very expensive) items. I picked up a few gorgeous postcards as mementos—those photos taken by professional photographers are just stunning!

The designs of the souvenirs are so creative! Check out this cutting board that mimics the shape of the Elbphilharmonie (2024 price—on sale for €350!!!). It’s so beautiful that even if I bought it, I’d never want to use it!

Cruise Tour: See the Elbphilharmonie from Different Angles
If you have enough time, I highly recommend taking a cruise tour to view the port of Hamburg, where you can get up close to the massive containers. Plus, you can enjoy the harbor and the Elbphilharmonie from different perspectives while on the cruise!
